Public Art Network 2004 national recognition as one of the most innovative public art projects. I researched the forgotten history of Kansas City’s streetcar system. I reflected on how the streetcar was a symbol of community in the early 1900’s. It was also the streetcar that helped pump the thriving economy of a bustling downtown at that time. In the last half century the downtown has become almost entirely lifeless. Currently, a tremendous energy is being invested in revitalizing the downtown area as leaders discuss the concept of light rail. This ghosted three-dimensionally woven streetcar (modeled after a 1920’s version) reflects on the flourishing urban core of Kansas City’s past and how an old idea could be reapplied to benefit us today as well as in looking into the future of remaking the urban core.
