Evanston Art Center Sculpture on the Grounds—Evanston, Illinois
Public Art Network 2008 national recognition for one of the most innovative public art projects. These large-scale structures are comprised of thousands of bottles each containing and corked with a uniquely created message by young and old alike community members from the Evanston Community. The five structures appear to half sunken in the ground, which appear to be the hulls of capsized shipwrecks. All five structures point toward the historic Grosse Point Lighthouse sharing the same property. At night, all five structures are internally illuminated by L.E.D. lights. As a whole the artwork is a reflection of the past and present Evanston community, Lake Michigan, the fascinating history of the lighthouse and the tragic/mysterious history of shipwrecks off its coast.
